Navigating the Challenges: A Professional Woman's Journey to Franchise Ownership Success
In the realm of entrepreneurship, franchise ownership stands out as a promising avenue for individuals seeking to realize their business dreams within established frameworks. However, for professional women entering this domain, the journey toward success is often paved with unique challenges. Despite the increasing representation of women in business leadership roles, the landscape of franchise ownership presents hurdles that demand resilience, strategic navigation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Christina Ferrer is a great example of a woman who overcame challenges that she faced as she made the decision to leave the corporate world and become a franchise owner. Leaving a comfortable professional job in a career with almost 2 decades of experience was tough and scary, but she overcame it by finding something that fulfills her and makes her feel like she is making a difference in people’s lives. Many of the challenges that Christina faced are the same ones that many women face as they take the same journey that she did.
One of the primary challenges facing professional women venturing into franchise ownership is the perceived gender gap within the industry. Despite significant progress in recent years, women continue to be underrepresented among franchise owners. There are however numerous great franchise companies led by women and Christina chose one of those for her foray into business ownership. LIVE Hydration Spa was founded by two professional women, and they continue to lead the company today. When Christina and her husband/business partner Daniel decided to explore the franchise world, they knew that finding a company that was a good fit was particularly important. Knowing that Christina would be overseeing the day-to-day operations of their multi-unit franchise, they wanted to ensure the franchisor was a good fit. Finding a franchise with two women as founders and leaders made the transition easier for Christina.
Another significant obstacle for professional women pursuing franchise ownership is the struggle to strike a balance between career aspirations and personal responsibilities. Juggling the demands of entrepreneurship with family obligations, caregiving duties, or other professional commitments can be daunting. Christina says that though she is working more now than she did prior to franchise ownership, she is better able to determine her own schedule and is even able to take her son to and from school most days, which she couldn’t do before. She also knows that she and Daniel have good alignment on their goals, both personal and professional, but they still have to remember to put work to the side sometimes and focus on each other. Navigating this delicate equilibrium calls for effective time management, boundary-setting, and prioritization techniques. The work/life balance is attainable.
The path to success in franchise ownership demands proficiency in a myriad of business domains, ranging from financial management and marketing to operational efficiency and customer service. While many professional women bring valuable skills and expertise from their corporate careers, transitioning into the entrepreneurial sphere requires adapting to new roles and responsibilities. Overcoming the learning curve necessitates a growth mindset, humility to seek guidance and mentorship, and a willingness to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Self-doubt can weigh heavily on a person when making this transition to business ownership. Christina experienced something very common…. that was other people who don’t have the vision or who don’t dream big, planting seeds of doubt and negative comments about her decision to make the move to business ownership. Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people is especially important. Christina says “hearing those doubts/negative comments puts a little fear in you, but I am thankful my husband is the biggest dreamer I know and kept believing in me and our vision. I think isolating yourself from negative people anytime you are trying to level up is a critical part of life/business. We try to surround ourselves with positive, driven, and faith filled people.”
Scaling a franchise business requires strategic planning, resource allocation, and effective management of growth challenges. For professional women, scaling up may pose unique hurdles, including access to financing for expansion, talent acquisition, and balancing increased responsibilities. Overcoming these challenges demands careful planning, leveraging technology and automation, and building a strong team to support business growth while maintaining quality and customer satisfaction. The number of women now building and scaling franchise businesses is increasing every month! There are many examples of this success, and it shows just how effective women can be at owning and operating their own franchise business. Christina and Daniel opened their first LIVE Hydration Spa location in West Des Moines, Iowa in 2022. That location is doing very well, and they will be opening another location in Grimes, Iowa in the coming weeks!
Networking plays a crucial role in business success, yet professional women in franchise ownership historically encountered limited access to relevant networks and mentorship opportunities. This is changing and there are now more opportunities for women to network with other female franchise owners. Proactive efforts to seek out female-focused networking groups, industry associations, or mentorship programs tailored to women in franchising will serve you well.
The journey of a professional woman towards becoming a successful franchise owner is fraught with challenges yet brimming with opportunities for growth and empowerment. As Christina Ferrer continues to demonstrate, if you are prepared for the challenges ahead, you can successfully make the move from being a professional woman, to a successful franchise owner! Overcoming systemic barriers, balancing competing priorities, mastering diverse skill sets, and challenging gender biases are integral to navigating this path with resilience and determination. By leveraging their strengths, seizing opportunities, and fostering supportive networks, women can ascend to the pinnacle of franchise ownership, leaving an indelible mark on the entrepreneurial landscape. As trailblazers and change agents, they pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future, where gender is no longer a barrier but a source of strength and innovation in the world of business.
